Introduction of NHSS.....

Tibetan school of various levels are spread across all the Tibetan Settlements in India, Nepal and Bhutan. Since Nepal has the largest concentration of Tibetan Refugees outside India, the Department of Tibetan Education, Dharamsala had accordingly over the years facilitated the opening of a sizable number of primary and middle schools to provide education opportunity to Tibetans living in the settlements or in the remote region of Nepal. However these schools being mostly upto primary or middle level, were thereofre unable to provide continued higher education. As a result, only few children could attend Tibetan schools in India and many due to their family economic condition could not pursue their higher studies.

BACKGROUND:

In order to overcome this problem to the extent possible, the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala, India, came for the rescue and the land was purchased. Since it was beyond the means the SOS Kinderdorf International was approached with request to assist to finance the school building construction and provide the necessary infrastrucutre. With acceptance by the SOS Kinderdorf International, the Namgyal High School's clock thus set into motion from 2nd April 1988.

The first few years are the hardest for the infant born delicate-every short of difficult poses its head, the baby has to learn a range of things simultaneously and so forth, but in spite of every hardship, the child keeps growing; so it was with the Namgyal Higher Secondary School. So it is with the beginning of every new work, and that is why the greatest honor must go to those far-sighted individuals who conceived the idea, put in their best efforts and started the school! Many Tibetans residing in Kathamndu Valley have made significant contribution both in cash and kind to the school at its early years.

The early 1993, Late Mr. Wangdu Phuntsok was appointed to take up the leadership of the school and was entrusted with full responsibility to bring the school to a position to ultimately shape it to be a good standard Tibetan school in Nepal.


SCHOOL PURPOSE AND GOALS:


In aims and goals, Namgyal Hihger Secondary seeks to impart an education that reflects the Tibetan aspirations. At the same time, a broad based curriculum endeavors to imbibe and impart the values of social awareness and responsibility, respect towards self and others, opportunity for individual growth, and so forth. In short, the school seeks to provide a quality education that focuses on the all round development of a child and this effort shall always continue.


CURRICULUM AND TEST BOOKS:


The school is affiliated to the Higher Secondary Education Board and registered with the Ministry of Education, HMG, Nepal. Namgyal Higher Secondary School is the only Tibetan Higher Secondary School with facilities of providing higher education to young Tibetans in Nepal and prepares them for college/university level education.


The pattern of education follows the system of the Higher Secondary Educaiton Board(HSEB) of Nepal. The textbooks used are those prescribed by the HSEB and the medium of instruction is English. In addition, Tibetan language and religion are taughts as compulsory subjects. Part of the curriculum in the school is also teaching of Tibetan music and Dance with separate teacher appointed for the subject. In addition to academic accomplishment, extra curricular activities play a vital role in the harmonious growth of students' personality. To promote games and sports and to encourage a familiarity among the studetns, activities are organized throughout the year at Inter-house level and also with other neighboring schools and clubs.


Namgyal Higher Secondary School is a full-fledged residential school with capacity for over 400 students and 50 staffs(teaching and non-teaching).


ENROLLMENT:


Besides, serving as the main observing school for studetns passing out of 8 primary/middle and secondary level Tibetan schools in Nepal, Namgyal Higher Secondary School also caters to the educational need of Nepalese citizen of Tibetan ethnic groups. Each year an average of 100 new students are enrolled.
